Propipe Hot Tapping Machines
Hot tap machines enable technicians to safely drill into pressurized pipelines without disrupting flow—making them essential for minimizing downtime, facilitating emergency repairs, and maintaining compliance with pipeline integrity standards.
Propipe PTM Hot Tap Machines: Safe, Pressurized Line Entry
The PTM Hot Tap Machine is a tapping system engineered for safe, efficient access to pressurized pipelines. Designed for live pipeline interventions, it enables technicians to drill into active lines without interrupting flow—making it ideal for installing branch connections, valves, or line stop equipment.
How It Works:
- Mounted on a valve and fitting pre-installed on the pipeline.
- Drives a cutter through the pipe wall.
- Once the cut is complete, the machine retracts, and the valve is closed to seal the system.
This machine is essential for field crews and maintenance teams seeking reliable, compliant solutions for pipeline access under pressure. Perfect for reducing operational risk and maximizing uptime.
Key Functions:
- Hot Tapping: Creates a controlled opening in a live pipeline through a valve and fitting, enabling tie-ins or access without depressurization.
- Line Stop Preparation: Often used in conjunction with line stop systems to isolate sections of pipe for maintenance or rerouting.
- High-Pressure Operation: Rated to a maximum working pressure of 1,480 psi (100 bar).
Key Benefits:
• Live Access Without Shutdown: Perform hot taps on pressurized systems without service interruption.
• Supports Valve and Line Stop Installation: Compatible with various fittings for pipeline modification and isolation.
• Minimizes Downtime: Maintains operational continuity during maintenance or expansion.

Frequently Asked Questions
Hot Tapping Basics
What is a hot tapping machine?
A hot tapping machine drills a controlled opening into a live, pressurized pipeline. It mounts on a valve and fitting already installed on the pipe, drives a cutter through the pipe wall, then retracts so the valve can be closed and the line stays sealed. No shutdown or venting is needed.
How does hot tapping work?
A fitting is attached to the pipe and a valve is mounted on the fitting. The hot tap machine is mounted on the valve, and its cutter and pilot drill are advanced through the open valve to cut the pipe wall. When the cut is complete, the machine retracts the cutter and the valve is closed to seal the new connection.
Can a hot tap machine be used for a line stop?
Yes. The hot tap is the first step of a line stop. The machine cuts the opening, then a line stop actuator drives a plugging head through the same slim valve and fitting to block flow. Enerteq supplies the matching Propipe cutters, pilot drills and power units.
Machines and Pipe Sizes
Which hot tap machines does Enerteq supply?
Enerteq supplies the Propipe PTM range: the PTM-1000, PTM-2000, PTM-3000, PTM-5000 and PTM-7000 Series. Standard strokes run from 18″ on the PTM-1018-MN to 150″ on the PTM-7150-HYD. The PTM-1000 Series is also available with special strokes of 20″ or 24″.
What pipe sizes can be hot tapped?
Drilling capacity depends on the series: PTM-1000, 1/4″ to 6″; PTM-2000, 3″ to 8″; PTM-3000, 3″ to 20″; PTM-5000, 12″ to 44″. PTM-7000 diameter ranges run from 16″ up to 72″ depending on model; these figures are indicative and may vary. All capacities are for drilling mild steel pipe.
Can PTM machines tap at an angle?
Yes. All PTM series can tap horizontally, vertically or at any angle.
Can PTM machines be used subsea?
Yes. All PTM series can be used subsea.
Is there a PTM-7000 data sheet?
No. There is no separate data sheet for the PTM-7000; it functions like the PTM-5000 Series. Contact Enerteq Solutions for PTM-7000 specifications.
Are hot tap machines manual, pneumatic or hydraulic?
It depends on the series. The PTM-1000 can be operated manually or by air with the optional PPM-1000 air motor. The PTM-2000 can be built for pneumatic or hydraulic operation. The PTM-3000 can be operated by air or hydraulics. The PTM-5000 is hydraulically operated.
What powers the spindle on a hot tap machine?
On the PTM-3000 Series, the spindle turns at 40 RPM with the Propipe H23 power pack. On the PTM-5000 Series, it turns at 25 RPM with the Propipe PPP-5000 power pack. Both use a hydraulic motor with a chain drive. The PTM-1000 uses the optional PPM-1000 air motor (0.6 HP, 150 rpm).
Ratings, Materials and Standards
What pressure and temperature can a hot tap machine handle?
The PTM-1000 and PTM-2000 Series are rated for a maximum working pressure of 1,480 psi (100 bar) at 100°F (38°C), intermittent service from −20°F (−29°C) to 700°F (371°C) at 700 psi (48 bar), and continuous service at 350°F (177°C) at 1,025 psi (70 bar). The PTM-3000 and PTM-5000 Series have a maximum pressure rating of 1,480 psi (100 bar). For higher pressure or temperature requirements, consult the factory.
What is the maximum wall thickness a hot tap machine can cut?
PTM machines can cut up to 3″ wall thickness in mild steel.
Can you hot tap stainless steel or other materials?
Yes. PTM machines are able to cut stainless steel, API grade pipe (Gr. B and X80) and concrete. Capacities are stated for mild steel and may be reduced when operating on other materials.
What standards do hot tap machines meet?
The PTM-1000 and PTM-2000 Series meet NACE Standard and CE, and use sulfide stress cracking resistant metallic material for oilfield equipment.
Plugs and Compatibility
Can a hot tap machine install plugs?
Yes. PTM machines are capable of installing LockSure and flow-through plugs.
Are PTM machines compatible with other brands of equipment?
Yes. PTM machines and their spindles are compatible with most major brands of equipment and tooling.
